How it works

What you actually get

Best for: discs at or near their minimum thickness, lipped edges, or a pulsing brake pedal.

Discs wear as well as pads, just more slowly. Once they are at their minimum thickness, or badly lipped at the edge, new pads on old discs will not bed in properly and you lose braking performance you have just paid for.

We clean the hub face back before the new discs go on. A disc bolted onto a rusty hub sits fractionally out of true, and that is what a pulsing brake pedal usually is — not warping, but a disc that was never running flat to begin with.

The car is road tested and the brakes bedded in before you collect, which is what stops a new set glazing in the first week.

Which cars? Any make or model. Discs vary in price more than pads do, so we confirm the figure from the registration before you book.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

Workshop brakes

Measured first, priced before we start

1

Tell us what it is doing

Grinding, squealing, a pulsing pedal or just a warning light — it narrows down what we are looking for before the car arrives.

2

Wheels off and measured

We measure the discs against the manufacturer's minimum and check the pads, then tell you the figures rather than an opinion.

3

You decide, with a price

Pads, or pads and discs, and what each costs on your car. Nothing happens until you have said yes.

4

Road tested before you collect

New brakes are bedded in on the road, not left for you to do. Twelve months on parts and labour.

Questions

About the Brake Pads and Discs

Do discs have to be done in pairs?

Yes, always both sides together — replacing one side alone leaves the car braking unevenly. Front and rear are separate jobs and are almost never due at the same time.

My brake pedal pulses. Is that warped discs?

Usually not. Genuine warping is rare. Far more often the disc is sitting slightly out of true because the hub face underneath it was not cleaned when it was fitted, or there is uneven pad deposit on the surface. Both are fixable, and we check which it is before selling you anything.

Are the pads included in that price?

Yes. Pads and discs, fitted, for a pair. There is no separate labour charge on top.

How often do brakes need doing?

Pads typically last between 25,000 and 40,000 miles, and discs about twice that — but town driving wears them far faster than motorway miles, so mileage alone is a poor guide. Any service we do includes a brake check, which is how most people find out.

Do you use manufacturer parts?

We fit quality branded parts as standard, and genuine manufacturer parts if you would rather. Tell us which when you book and we will price both.
