How it works

What you actually get

Best for: automatics that have had, or are having, a Stage 1 — and any auto that shifts lazily from standard.

On a modern automatic the gearbox has its own computer with its own limits, and some of those limits will hold back an engine file. If you re-map the engine and leave the gearbox alone, you can end up with more torque than the box has been told to allow.

A TCU file raises those limits to match, sharpens the shift speed and stops the box hunting between gears where a standard map would rather sit in the wrong one.

It is worth doing on its own if your car is an automatic that has always felt slow to react, and it is close to essential alongside a Stage 1 on a torque-converter or DSG box.

Which cars? ZF 8-speed, DSG and most modern torque-converter automatics. Manual cars do not have a TCU to write to.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

1

Confirm what is possible

Send us the registration and we confirm what can safely be gained on your exact engine, and what it costs, before you book.

2

Health check first

The car is checked over before a single line is written. If something needs attention first we tell you, rather than mapping over it.

3

Your original map is saved

The factory file is read off and archived before the new one goes on, so the car can be put back to standard at any point.

4

Road tested with you

We drive it, then you drive it. If it is not what you wanted, the original goes straight back on.

Questions

About the Gearbox TCU Re-Map

Do I need this if I'm having a Stage 1?

On an automatic it is strongly worth it — the gearbox limits are often what stops you feeling the whole of an engine file. Booked together it is cheaper than doing them separately, and we quote the pair up front.

Will it make the box wear out faster?

Not at sensible settings. We raise limits to suit the torque the engine is actually making rather than to the maximum the software allows, which is the difference between a sharper box and an expensive one.

Do I have to tell my insurer about a re-map?

Yes. A re-map is a modification, and not declaring it gives an insurer grounds to refuse a claim. Most note it for a modest premium change, and we will put the details in writing for you to forward.

Do you remove DPFs, EGRs or AdBlue systems?

No. It is an MOT failure and illegal for road use. If your emissions equipment is faulty we will help you fix it properly instead.
